We all know that this year has been another difficult one for many people and many sectors. Those working with non-profits know this only too well. 2021 unleashed the outbreak of the Delta Variant of Covid 19 which began in India. The world watched in horror as India struggled to breathe, people died in their homes and in hospital queues as the country suffered from a deadly shortage of oxygen. Countries all over the world sent aid to the ravaged sub-continent. HOPE and the Irish public stepped up.
Despite losing 40% of their fundraising income HOPE were looking forward to spending 2021 planning events to celebrate 22 years of the organisation’s work in Kolkata. Instead, The Hope Foundation, who rely completely on donations and fundraising events, had to again cancel all trips and many public events. On top of this the organisation found itself fundraising for oxygen cylinders, heart monitors, medical packs for families on the streets and in the slums as the new variant took hold with a frightening ferocity. HOPE, with the help of the Irish public, managed to raise funds and save lives at the same time, expanding their hospital to treating only Covid patients and setting up vital ICU care. It was challenge after challenge that could only be met with your help.
The Hope Foundation have been working with the street and slum children and their communities in Kolkata since 1999. Founded by Cork native Maureen Forrest, HOPE have reached out and supported up to 2.9 million people living in dire poverty. The pandemic has turned into a nightmare for so many, including the HOPE family both in Ireland and in Kolkata.
When thinking of how to fundraise this Christmas the charity wanted to share some positivity but also just as importantly, give something back to people who donate. They recognised how difficult the past 18 months have been for people all over Ireland, so in 2021 they are asking for people to embrace the true spirit of Christmas by helping those who are in desperate need but they also want to give you something nice in return for that special donation.
The HOPE Foundations Christmas Campaign includes a number of ways in which you can help the HOPE family while also doing something very special for members of yours. The personalised Santa letters were a big hit in 2020, so this year they are now also offering a special letter from Santa Paws for beloved pets in recognition of all the furry friends who have been a great comfort to us during the pandemic!
